It is simply towards end which begins to break down, nevertheless smack-right up finale rescues it from the ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you can wisely dialogued, it will have no great complications in the traditions down the extremely unsightly name.” [ 8 ]

Brand new film’s copywriter and you can director, Robert Rossen, creates a beneficial multidimensional chess game, to own mortal bet, between Johnny, their boss (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a great scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever aunt (Nina Foch) spent some time working within gambling enterprise and dated a corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic program, the brand new cast’s suavely controlled gestures out of love and you may possibility, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can fashionably cocky images (along with his political conscience) make this pugnacious yet , intricate spectacle a hidden antique of one’s style.” [ ten ]

Cobb, because the an authorities inspector, along with up the get . Whilst spot employs a familiar trend, the latest characterizations is actually new and the performances sufficient so you’re able to overbalance. Dialog is actually terse and you may topical, avoiding the psychological, phoney reach. Unusual cam bases show up now and then to heighten attract and momentarily arrest the attention. Strong teamplay from the Robert Rossen, doubling because manager-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, unique publisher and you can member manufacturer, including supports rendering it a softer development.” [ 11 ]

Its mostly a matter of watching Mr. Powell undergo his paces stylishly while you are a large shed regarding stars and you may actresses render your typical support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the good nothing lady which brings forth the finest in him and you can Ellen Drew is the smooth and you will slinky vixen exactly who gets your into jams. Thomas Gomez are fatty since villain and you may Lee J. Cobb really does an alternative in a position concert tour as a tired cops inspector just who in the long run closes the way it is. A lot of ingesting and puffing is carried out by the the concerned.” [ a dozen ]
