Kine A week told you “This new sturdy ‘crooks slip out’ try peopled having a colourful diversity away from vital and you will arresting letters, and they, skilfully controlled of the blogger and you can movie director, let the movie to tread h2o effectively. It is merely toward become that it actually starts to break apart, nevertheless slap-upwards finale rescues it about ‘red’. Excellently staged and you may smartly dialogued, it has no high issue for the life style down its very ugly name.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Flick Bulletin said “The film motions from the a quick pace, the newest conversation are advanced and characterisations generally productive. Dick Powell and Evelyn Keyes direct the new throw professionally, while the investigator is enjoyed big aplomb of the see your face identity, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]
Richard Brody throughout the The fresh Yorker noted “This terse and you will taut flick noir is according to this new romantic and you may elite group issues of one’s term reputation, the fresh violent genius (starred because of the Cock Powell) behind a sophisticated illegal local casino. New film’s author and you will manager, Robert Rossen, sets up a beneficial multidimensional chess online game, for mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, their company (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Received), a cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever aunt (Nina Foch) spent some time working at gambling enterprise and dated a great corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The new caustically epigrammatic program, the cast’s suavely regulated body gestures out of like and menace, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can stylishly assertive photos (in addition to their governmental conscience) get this pugnacious yet , detail by detail spectacle a low profile vintage of one’s style.” [ ten ]

Pic keeps activity and you can suspense, and you can certain brief touches of jokes to provide taste. Expert performances by Penis Powell, since a betting home overseer, and you can Lee J. Cobb, while the a police inspector, along with up the score . While the area pursue a common pattern, the fresh characterizations is actually fresh as well as the performances adequate in order to overbalance. Dialog is actually terse and you may relevant, steering clear of the emotional, phoney touching. Unusual camera basics come-along once in a while so you can heighten focus and briefly arrest the eye. Solid teamplay of the Robert Rossen, increasing just like the movie director-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, unique copywriter and representative producer, and aids in rendering it a smooth design.” [ eleven ]

Its mostly an issue of seeing Mr. Powell go through their paces fashionably when you’re a huge cast off actors and you will actresses provide your vintage support. Evelyn Keyes performs the nice nothing woman which brings forth the fresh new best in your and you may Ellen Received is the easy and you will slinky vixen which becomes your for the jams. Thomas Gomez try oily given that villain and you will Lee J. Cobb do a separate in a position trip due to the fact a tired cops inspector just who finally shuts the truth. A great amount of taking and you may puffing is done by the all the concerned.” [ several ]
