Vital reception
Kine A week told you “The brand new sturdy ‘crooks slip out’ was peopled that have a colorful variety away from crucial and you can arresting characters, that, skilfully manipulated because of the copywriter and you may director, allow the movie so you can tread drinking water effectively. It is only to the end this begins to break down, nevertheless smack-up finale rescues they from the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you can wisely dialogued, it’ll have zero great problem inside the way of living off its incredibly ugly name.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Film Bulletin said “The movie movements at a quick speed, the latest dialogue try advanced and you will characterisations essentially energetic. Manhood Powell and you will Evelyn Keyes direct the throw skillfully, while the detective is played with significant aplomb by the see your face personality, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody from the The Yorker detailed “Which terse and you may tight motion picture noir was centered on brand new close and you may elite group conflicts of title profile, the fresh new violent mastermind (starred because of the Cock Powell) at the rear of a smart unlawful gambling establishment. The film’s publisher and you will manager, Robert Rossen, sets up a great multidimensional chess online game, for mortal limits, between Johnny, their employer (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), a good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may an excellent scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sis (Nina Foch) did from the gambling enterprise and old a great corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The latest caustically epigrammatic program, this new cast’s suavely regulated body language out-of love and you will risk, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can fashionably cocky pictures (and his political conscience) get this pugnacious yet detailed spectacle a hidden antique of your own category.” [ ten ]

Photo enjoys motion and you may anticipation, and you can particular small meets out-of jokes to add style. Ace activities of the Penis Powell, as the a playing family overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, since the an authorities inspector, together with in the rating . Even though the patch uses a common development, the newest characterizations try new in addition to activities adequate so you’re able to overbalance. Dialog are terse and you will relevant, preventing the psychological, phoney contact. Uncommon camera basics arrive occasionally so you can escalate interest and you may temporarily stop the interest. Solid teamplay by the Robert Rossen, doubling since the manager-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, new author and you can affiliate music producer, and additionally supports making it a smooth manufacturing.” [ eleven ]

Its primarily an issue of viewing Mr. Powell proceed through their paces stylishly if you are a giant throw regarding stars and actresses provide him classic support. Evelyn Keyes performs the great absolutely nothing woman which brings out the best in your and you can Ellen Drew ‘s the smooth and you will slinky vixen exactly who will get your into the jams. Thomas Gomez are greasy given that villain and you can Lee J. Cobb does a new ready tour because a weary police inspector which ultimately closes the way it is. A lot of drinking and you may smoking is performed by most of the worried.” [ several ]
